Marathon Monday Jacket Design for the Boston Marathon
Location
Boston, MA
Date
April 2024
Role
Designer, Artist
At Boston College, Marathon Monday is our Super Bowl, our Christmas Morning, our Met Gala. With our campus sitting at Mile 21 (infamously known as "Heartbreak Hill") it's a day filled with celebration and outrageous outfits. During my sophomore year, my roommates and I decided to each put our own spin on a denim theme.
Knowing that Boston's April weather could consist of anything from a snow storm to a heat wave, I decided a denim jacket would be the perfect layering piece. I wanted to make this jacket unique, though. Using bandana print (a BC staple thanks to Welles Crowther, "The Man in the Red Bandana"), I cut fabric into broken hearts as a nod to Heartbreak Hill. I also hand-painted the lettering across the back, incorporating heart cutouts into some of the letters to make the overall theme more cohesive.
Not only did this jacket turn heads on Marathon Monday, but it's become a staple in all of my friends' wardrobes, being borrowed to wear at pretty much every BC football game. I've even been asked to make similar jackets for other people!
